Department of Building Engineering & Construction Management
Building Engineering and Construction Management (BECM) is a new Department at Khulna University of Engineering & Technology under the Faculty of Civil Engineering. Bangladesh University Grants Commission (UGC) gave the permission on September 02, 2013 to open this new department. Later on 12 September 2013, the Academic Council of KUET decided to enroll 60 students in this new department at undergraduate level from the academic session 2013-2014. As a developing and emerging country, Bangladesh needs Building Engineers coupled with construction management specialty for the development of physical infrastructures ensuring technical soundness, cost effectiveness and environment-friendly criterion.
A building engineer is recognised as being expert in the use of technology in the design, construction, assessment and maintenance of the built environment. Building engineers are concerned with the planning, design, construction, operation, renovation, and maintenance of buildings, as well as with their impacts on the surrounding environment.
Construction Management (CM) is a professional service that uses specialized, project management techniques to oversee the planning, design, and construction of a project, from its beginning to its end. The purpose of CM is to control a project’s time, cost and quality. CM is compatible with all project delivery systems, including design-bid-build, design-build, CM At-Risk and Public Private Partnerships.
These two sectors have been combined and introduced to us as Building Engineering and Construction Management. The BECM graduates will play an important role in the social and economic development of the country. There was no scope to study this discipline in Bangladesh since no university has offered such department so far. In Bangladesh, for the first time, this department starts its journey only in KUET from the academic year 2013-2014. BECM coordinates the activities to facilitate the realization of a coherent integrated building solution with the planning, design, construction, operation, renovation, maintenance of buildings as well as with their impacts on the surrounding environment and thus appropriate approach to conduct all relevant activities properly.
The department is in the 3rd floor of B-block of the New Academic Building. 4 batches are now studying in this department consisting 240 students, 60 students in each and 8 faculties. This department has 4 class rooms, a seminar room, a drawing and modeling lab where modelling of architectural and interior designs of different building related objects are developed, one computer lab. In future, some lab will be developed very soon such as concrete lab, soil lab, strength of materials lab, surveying lab, photography and interior design lab etc. A club named P2da has been founded with a vision to go with the competitive world in the engineering, construction and management fields to be expert in various software related to the planning, design, drawing, construction etc.
The undergraduate program showcases several disciplines within civil engineering, architecture engineering, construction management, wind and earthquake engineering, fire engineering etc. Courses related to advanced building structures, foundation analysis, design, construction, maintenance, construction safety, building codes, regulations and specifications, earthquake resistance, wind effects on buildings, various computer aided designs, lighting and acoustics, heating, ventilation, air-conditioning control systems, indoor air quality, construction management are included in this undergraduate program. These courses of this program not only develop the skills for professional practice, communication skills, problem solving skills, interpersonal skills as well as lifelong learning but also provide our students with a sound and broad education which prepares them for professional practice in the competitive field.
